England Sounds the Alarm on District Nursing: Two Major Reports Raise Global Questions

Last week, two significant reports out of England have drawn attention to the mounting crisis in community and district nursing.

The Nuffield Trust released a national report warning of serious strain across the district nursing workforce — citing unsustainable workloads, declining capacity, and urgent risks to patient care. This follows last week’s annual State of Health and Social Care in England 2024–25 report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which echoed similar concerns across the broader health and social care landscape.

The message is clear: without renewed investment, policy attention, and workforce planning, vital community-based care services risk further decline.

These developments will resonate globally, as countries everywhere face shared challenges in sustaining safe, skilled, and accessible home and community nursing.
